The OUC-sponsored pre-apprenticeship training program was honored on May 3, 2022, with a Downtown Orlando Partnership 2022 Golden Brick Award. OUC garnered the recognition in the “Community” category for making “tremendous contributions to our shared community and . . . a substantial impact on Downtown Orlando.”

OUC launched the program, formally known as the Vocational Training Partnership (VTP), in 2021, with participants learning jobs skills in construction, carpentry, electrical, plumbing and building maintenance. The inaugural class graduated 11 young men, and all received full-time job offers that included benefits and continued training as apprentices. OUC hired one of the top performers in the program, Vale Price Jr., as a Warehouse III Associate.

Eleven young men, seen here with two instructors, graduated from the inaugural OUC-sponsored pre-apprenticeship training class with full-time job offers.

OUC’s sponsorship of the jobs training school covered student tuition and other costs, including the instructor’s salary. Program partner iBuild Central Florida provided classroom and lab support. The workforce development program is an initiative of OUC’s Empowerment Zone, an economically disadvantaged area covering the 32805 ZIP code (I-4 west to John Young Parkway and Colonial Drive south to Kaley Avenue). Through targeted investments, OUC seeks to help revitalize the community.

Alandus Sims, Strategic Partnership & Projects Manager, helped create the VTP and oversees OUC’s continued support for the program.

The Community Golden Brick Award was sponsored by First Presbyterian Church of Orlando.
