Cooling is the largest source of energy use in most Florida homes, and air leaks can waste a significant amount of your energy dollars. Learn how to locate common sources of home air leaks and seal them. You’ll save money and improve the comfort of your home.

Windows
Windows are the largest source of energy loss in a typical home. Caulking is one of the most cost-effective ways to make your home more comfortable and efficient. Inspect the outside of your windows for cracked or missing caulking. Carefully remove and replace with outdoor-rated silicone to seal gaps.

Doors
A quick door check can help keep cool air inside. Check for worn or damaged weatherstripping around exterior door frames and replace it if needed. Then check for gaps under the door – if air is escaping, add a door sweep to seal it. You can find weatherstripping and door sweeps at your local home improvement retailer.

Attic
Your attic plays a big role in home comfort and efficiency. Aim for 12 to 14 inches of insulation and make sure your R-value meets recommended levels for our climate zone. If you’re low, a qualified professional can help add insulation – one of the most effective upgrades you can make.

Also, check that your attic is well sealed. Gaps around ceiling fixtures, fans, vents, flues and ductwork can allow conditioned air to leak. Pull back insulation to locate openings and seal them with caulk or expandable foam. Only place insulation over insulation contact (IC)-rated fixtures, and use an approved light cover. Don’t forget to weatherstrip attic access too.

Taking these steps goes a long way toward helping your A/C run more efficiently, saving you money while keeping you cool.
