More than 3,500 runners and walkers hit the streets of downtown Orlando on December 2. The occasion was the 41st Annual OUC Orlando Half Marathon and Track Shack Lake Eola 5K.
At OUC, we are committed to weaving sustainability through everything we do. To show our commitment, OUC worked with Track Shack to earn a Silver Certification from the Council for Responsible Sport. The Orlando Half Marathon is the first and only race in Florida to earn the honor.
How do you make a half marathon more sustainable? Here are a few of the highlights from the event:
- Tapped drinking water from OUC hydrants along the route, eliminating 2,700 plastic gallon jugs.
- Made event shirts from recycled polyester.
- Collected more than 250 lbs. of compostable food and delivered it to community gardens in need of organic material.
- Encouraged attendees to ride the bus, bike, or carpool instead of driving in a car alone.
