On Sunday, January 26, more than 2,000 runners, including over a dozen OUC employees, took part in the 12th annual Town of Celebration Marathon and Half-Marathon.
The course took racers through the pleasant tree-lined streets and pedestrian pathways of Celebration in Osceola County. And the early morning chill at the 7 a.m. start made for perfect running conditions, said volunteer race director and OUC Vice President of Transmission, Ken Zambito.
“The upper 40s, low 50s are ideal running conditions. And we had no rain,” noted Zambito, one of the race’s founders who has run marathons in all 50 states.
The race, certified by USA Track & Field, draws competitors from throughout Florida and around the country. It is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.
But at its heart it is a very community-oriented, fun event.
“We try to make the race about the runner experience. We have a post-race party. We make pancakes and bring in food from local restaurants. We are very conscious that our medals and shirts are well-designed. And we give away a nice blanket as a swag item,” explained Zambito.
The race, which OUC sponsors, serves as a fundraiser, with more than $1 million going to local community groups since it began in 2014. Recipients include the Boys & Girls Clubs in Osceola County and “Thriving in Place,” a Celebration Foundation that assists local seniors and those with disabilities to lead healthy and independent lives in their own homes. Additionally, each Osceola County high school receives funds for scholarships, and scout troops and student groups benefit from assisting with race day activities.
