OUC has donated 20 laptops to an Orlando nonprofit that helps at-risk youth stay engaged with education.
ELEVATE Orlando will place the used Dell laptops with students at the beginning of the 2021-22 school year. OUC paid the cost of upgrading the laptops to ELEVATE’s specifications. ELEVATE says its mission is to establish “long-term, life-changing relationships with urban youth, equipping them to thrive and contribute to their community.
In addition to the laptop donation, OUC will arrange tutoring sessions with volunteers through the Empowerment Zone Taskforce, the team overseeing the Empowerment 4 the Future Zone initiative. OUC has designated the economically disadvantaged area encompassing the 32805 ZIP code (it runs from I-4 west to John Young Parkway and Colonial Drive south to Kaley Avenue) as the Empowerment Zone. The taskforce seeks to help revitalize the community by leveraging OUC’s resources and partnerships to enhance educational opportunities, health and wellness programs, jobs training and sustainable housing.
Alandus Sims, Project Manager of Strategic Community Partnerships, Aldrenia Byrom, Manager of IT Support Center, and Endy Ortiz, Supervisor of IT Support Center, facilitated the donation.
