A “smart” water monitor installed on your home’s main water line provides you with real time consumption data, leak detection alerts and, depending on the model, the capability to remotely shut off the flow of water. Just open the accompanying app on your smartphone and you’re in control of your home’s water usage even when you’re miles away.
OUC water customers who purchase and install either a Flo by Moen™ Smart Water Shutoff, Phyn Smart Water Assistant, Phyn Plus, StreamLabs Control or StreamLabs Smart Home Water Monitor are eligible to receive a $100 rebate from OUC. Only a limited number of rebates are available, so don’t delay in applying for one.
Installing a smart water monitor also could qualify for a discount on your homeowner’s insurance policy because you’re adding a layer of protection against water damage to your home’s interior. Three of the OUC-approved water monitors offer remote water shutoff, and all provide 24/7 monitoring.
According to the EPA’s WaterSense program:
- The average household’s leaks can account for more than 10,000 gallons of water wasted every year, or the amount of water needed to wash 270 loads of laundry.
- Ten percent of homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons or more per day.
- Fixing easily corrected household water leaks can save homeowners about 10 percent on their water bills.
“I think people are interested in technology that can help them conserve,” said Dave Mayer, OUC’s Supervisor of Sustainability. “A smart water monitor would pay for itself if it stops a leak from wasting thousands of gallons of water or damaging a home. It’s a smart investment.”
