As a new federal government efficiency standard for light bulbs goes into effect, commercial customers with OUC are reminded they can take advantage of a money-saving rebate to upgrade their lighting to all LED bulbs.

Businesses that replace outdated indoor lighting with energy-efficient light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs may be eligible for a $250 per kilowatt rebate, saving OUC commercial customers money on the cost of the bulbs and the energy they use. The Biden administration recently passed a regulation for light bulbs at 45 lumens per watt. (A lumen is a measurement of brightness.) LED bulbs not only meet this regulation but also use 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs. LEDs can save consumers money, last 25 to 50 times longer than their incandescent counterparts and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from energy production.

The era of some other lighting options, such as compact fluorescent bulbs, may be coming to an end, too. The U.S. Department of Energy has proposed raising the minimum energy efficiency standards for the most common light bulbs from 45 lumens per watt to 120 lumens per watt.

OUC offers a rebate that helps commercial customers make the switch to LED lighting. In addition, with the OUConvenient Indoor Lighting, a customer incurs no upfront costs but instead pays OUC through a monthly fee on their utility bill. The monthly fee is many times offset by the expected amount of monthly energy savings resulting from the updated lighting system. The typical payback period is less than five years.
