Due to our continuous efforts to achieve net zero CO2 emissions by 2050, OUC has one of the highest scores among Florida utilities rated by the Sierra Club for clean energy adoption.
This is the third year in a row that OUC has received a “B” grade in the Sierra Club’s Utility Climate Pledge Report, which examines efforts toward eliminating fossil fuels at 77 utilities.
OUC is solidly on track to meet our own emissions goal, with interim carbon reductions of 50% by 2030 and 75% by 2040. As part of these efforts, the utility has committed to investing $420 million in solar energy, $90 million in battery storage and $45 million in transportation electrification projects.
A combination of solar energy production, energy storage, vehicle electrification and energy efficiency programs will all play their part in reducing CO2 emissions, without sacrificing the affordable and reliable electric service that OUC is known for in our community.
As part of these efforts, OUC is committed to eliminating coal-fired generation at the Stanton Energy Center no later than 2027. And, with two new solar farms coming online next year, the utility’s solar capacity will increase to 274 megawatts, which is enough power for 50,000 typical Florida homes.
