The extreme cold snap earlier this month pushed heating systems to work much harder than usual, and that increased energy use may result in higher-than-normal electric bills for many customers. Even though many responded to OUC’s request to adjust thermostats during early-morning winter peak hours – typically 5 to 10 a.m., when heating demand is highest – keeping a home warm in such extreme temperatures still requires a significant amount of electricity.
If you’re facing a higher bill this month, support is available. Below are several financial assistance programs and payment options that can help.
If You Need Immediate Help
Project CARE
Project CARE assists customers at risk of losing utility service. Apply online through the Heart of Florida United Way or call 2-1-1 to learn about this and other available resources. Funds can only be used for overdue bills.
Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
LIHEAP provides help for customers who meet income and other eligibility requirements. Assistance may cover heating or cooling bills, avoiding disconnection, reconnection fees, and more.
Emergency Home Assistance for the Elderly (EHEAP)
EHEAP supports senior households with at least one reside age 60 or older. Assistance may be available for utility bills, deposits, reconnection fees, late fees, and other urgent needs.
Payment Arrangements & Plans
OUC may be able to offer payment arrangements or payment plans to customers struggling to pay a bill. Contact OUC customer service for details.
Managing Your Bill Throughout the Year
Budget Billing
Avoid seasonal bill spikes with Budget Billing. Your monthly payment is based on the average of your past 12 months of usage, helping you plan and budget more easily.
Power Pass
With OUC’s Power Pass prepay program, you pay for electricity in advance – when and how much you choose. You can monitor your usage online and receive alerts by text, email or phone to help you stay on top of your balance.
Increasing Efficiency to Save Energy and Money
Free Conservation Audits
With OUC’s conservation audits, conservation specialists are available via phone or at your home to discuss ways you can conserve energy. The specialist will review your personal usage and provide useful solutions. You can also inquire about ways OUC can help with upgrade costs, including rebates (see below).
Residential Rebates
OUC’s rebate program encourages the installation of new energy-efficient appliances, like A/C systems, windows, water heaters, ceiling insulation and more. OUC preferred contractors can provide installation and point-of-sale rebates for those who qualify.
